Finding Courage & Peace

“In the vast complex society of the 21st Century, man must, as never before, know how to meet the crises, emergencies and problems which have to do with his well-being.”

My grandfather, Dr. Lester Sumrall, wrote those words decades ago when compiling a series called How to Cope with Life’s Problems. The series focused on the many situations we face- fear, stress, the unknown, depression, anger, and more. Since his teachings were always Biblically based, the relevance of them has never subsided. The advice we find in How to Cope with the Unknown is applicable to the pandemic that is happening right now around the world. In this series Dr. Sumrall explores positive principles of truth that can be put into action to cope with any human problem.

“How do you cope with the unknown? I presume it’s one of the greatest problems that a human person, beginning with Adam and Eve, has had to confront. God wants us to face the future or to face anything we don’t understand with courage in our hearts and to know that we are conquerors.”

Psalm 91:5-7 says:

You will not fear the terror by night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the plague that stalks in darkness, nor the scourge that lays waste at noon. A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.

“I believe that God can put something in your heart to give you fulfillment so it doesn’t matter what’s out there. You’re going to face it in Jesus’ name. What is the unknown? The unknown is the inexperienced. Sometimes it’s just the future, because the future is closed to us. We have a great fear of it simply because it hasn’t happened. Fear and unbelief shatter your efforts to enter into new areas, areas that you haven’t been in before. So we must not permit the devil to keep us out. We must trust God and what His scriptures declare for us. We must take His hand and follow Him into the unknown with peace in our hearts.”

Jeremiah 29: 11-12 says:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.”
